Innovation Strategist

Position Overview:

Maddock Douglas (MD) is seeking an innovation practitioner to contribute to enabling our clients to grow, stake new ground and stay relevant into the future. Ideal candidates are highly strategic, comfortable dealing with ambiguity and have 3-5 years of qualitative and quantitative research experience but is looking for their role to expand beyond research. Candidates would need to work out of our Chicago-area office with flexibility to work from home once a week and be available to travel to various client locations for key meetings and workshops. Professional services consulting firm or creative agency experience is required. Position is contract to hire and once full time could pay up to $85,000 depending on level of experience and candidate qualifications.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Direct the execution of all client engagements, understanding client’s needs and expectations for the project and how they translate to deliverables/output.
  • Identify the appropriate approaches to meet challenges, then define the process and scope accordingly (this includes doing so in support of business development efforts)
  • Manage P&L to deliver against target metrics in collaboration with Business Unit Leader and Project Manager
  • Identify when additional resources are needed on projects assigned to and provide strategic direction to work teams, including across other business units and external partners/contractors
  • Consume a wide variety of inputs (e.g., client-provided documents, secondary research, client, expert or customer interviews) in order to uncover patterns and synthesize findings into well-structured, visually driven presentations
  • Attend key client meetings, leading the conversation and providing recommendations
  • Provide recommendations to clients/prospects in terms of optimal research methodologies
  • Lead the execution of qualitative and quantitative research deliverables (working with vendor partners and contractors as appropriate), including:
    • Development of screeners, surveys or discussion guides
    • Management of recruit, coordinating with facility and/or fielding
    • Conduct qualitative interviews and/or observe research
    • Final data cleaning, sample balance/data weighting and to create all data tables/banners for quantitative research
    • Analysis and report creation
  • Collaborate closely with work teams across competencies including design strategy, research and experience design to develop deliverables that meet client’s needs. Example projects include:
    • Strategic recommendations/road maps and growth strategies
    • Approach, tactics and tools for building an innovation program within an organization
    • Client or product competitive analysis
    • Future trend and relevant opportunity landscape framing
    • Customer Segmentation
    • Positioning development and testing
    • Customer personas and journey maps
    • Prototype development and testing
    • Product or process optimization recommendations
  • Participate as a table lead for client co-creation workshops, providing guidance and oversight and contributing to generation of content/ideas

Key Skills:

  • Solid understanding of how to approach different qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
  • Fast learner who can easily get up to speed on a client’s business and quickly synthesize information/data into digestible recommendations
  • Very comfortable with ambiguity and able to easily pivot in a fast-paced environment
  • Connective thinker who can quickly articulate abstract concepts and how they can be applied to create business value
  • Team player willing to “dig in” and make the progress needed to contribute to client value
  • Excellent communicator with ability to build rapport through authenticity and honest feedback
  • Strong ability to present findings and share recommendations with clients
  • Passionate, collaborative and always willing to find creative ways to make progress
  • Proficient in software necessary to illustrate business decisions  (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree
    • Business, Market Research, Psychology, Customer Experience, Design Thinking or related field preferred
  • 5+ years experience in a professional services environment.
